WSJ Rankings

Weekly Shonen Jump Pure Rankings

What is it? How does it work?

There are many publishers in Japan that sell weekly magazine issues of manga. The top and most popular in Japan and abroad is Weekly Shonen Jump from the publisher Shueisha. This magazine has all the well known Mangas: One Piece, Bleach, Naruto. They also printed such hits as Dragonball and Saint Seiya.

The problem with being popular is that there are many mangaka (manga artist) that wish to work for them. As a result the brass of the magazine thought that every week readers would fill out a “reader’s survey”, the results would form the ranks.  The lower the manga is on the ranks the more likely that it will be cancelled and replaced by a new one. Weekly Shonen Jump are very strict with this compared to other magazines that don’t really bother, but this is probably the reason why they are booming in Japan and the rest of the world.

The ranks are not shown as “ranks” in the magazine; they are listed as the Table of Content (ToC). This means that the better the manga does in the rankings the closer it is to the front page.

My rankings, as well as any other rankings you may see online are based on the 8 week rule. This means that from the time the readers fill out the survey for a particular issue, to when the results are printed in the magazine, 8 weeks would have past.

One last thing to note, mangas that have colour pages are excluded from the rankings as they are placed within the magazine at Shueisha's discretion.

Isobe Isobee Monogatari tends to have last position. At times it is known for Jump to publish 2 chapters in one volume, one these occassion I listed the chapter that is not in last place.

* Represents the first ranking of that particular series

  1. you can put the numbers of the chapters?

    1. The chapters that are being ranked are the ones from 8 weeks back. It could confuse people if I were to write a chapter number, as some people may think that its the chapter from the particular issue and not the ranked chapter or vice-versa.

  2. Every WSJ issue with Isobee always have 2 Isobee chapter. 1 normal chapter and 1 shorter special chapter at the very back of the magazine.

    1. I am aware. This page list the rankings.
For Isobe Isobee Monogatari only the first "normal" chapter is considered for the ranks.

  5. Why is Toriko numbers bouncing around so much? They got #1 once in January. Now they are in the middle again? I thought the Gourmet World arc is so much better than the earlier arcs. Been cheering for it.

    1. I think its mainly because of the other series. Yes the Gourmet arc is pretty awesome but newer series are getting a lot of votes. For example, Boku no Hero Academia.

    2. That the biggest problem with Shonen jump .The other series does better .Seeing my hero academia .I'm glad it's safe .Toriko got cancelled

    1. I certainly do. I have the rankings going back to 1999.
You can find them on the Plus Blog, which can be found by clicking the + sign on the menu bar; or by selecting "PharaoDopazo+" on the main menu list.

    2. I have a question. How did you get the older issues of Weekly Shonen Jump?

      Delete
  7. Why there are some occurrences the series is absent from the rank? What is the reason for their absent?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The rankings use the eight week rule. Meaning that the rankings you see for an issue is actually the ranking for a chapter eight weeks before. So if a series was absent eight weeks before then it cannot have a ranking in for that issue.
Look at the most recent ranking. Weekly Shonen Jump 2015 #40 has Toriko as "absent in ranked issue". Now count eight weeks back, which is #32. Toriko was absent so it cannot have a rank for a chapter that was not published.
I hope this clears things up. I made a video explaining all this. You can view it here: https://youtu.be/KG48XFf1pnc

  12. i hv a question. so is the first ranking of a series is the ranking for the first chapter or the 8th? since u said that colour page didnt get ranked n every first chapter is lead colour.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lets say a new series started in issue #1. Then ranking for that chapter will be shown in issue #8 which is 8 weeks or the 8th issue since the series started. If however in #8 that series has colour pages, then it will not show its rank of the first chapter.
I explain it better in this video: https://youtu.be/KG48XFf1pnc

  16. Black Clover is doing really good from this year.
    Shonen Jump's next big thing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, Black Clover has been doing well for itself since it started running. Many people believe it is so popular as it resembles Naruto. A story about a boy with no ability to fit in with the rest (through magic or ninjustu), and is underestimated by all that think little of him. This boy wants to become the strongest there is and so trains and gains special abilities that no one else has.
Despite this, I and many other people enjoy reading the series each week. Hence the good ranks.

    2. To me when I see a creator's series like this .I know black clover will be Shonen's jump longrunning

      Delete
  17. Good to see Black Clover doing well, I feel the art style is similar to Bleach but the story is much lighter in contrast.

An unrelated question I have, how long does a series need to last until it can stay in Weekly Shonen Jump without fear of being canceled? A certain number of chapters or something else? And might their be changes to series that go on for too long and become unpopular in the more recent example of Bleach?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I believe that a series would not have to worry about cancellation if a certain criterion is met. If it’s very popular. If it has been running for a very long time. If it has sold a lot of volumes.
The best example I can give is Kochikame. It ran for 40years, sold many volumes and was popular (in Japan).
Currently the regular series that do not fear their rankings or the threat of cancellation are: One Piece, Gintama, Isobee, PSI Kusou Saiki.
My Hero Academia, Black Clover & The Promised Neverland may join the list one day.
Do not take my word for it, as I have no solid WSJ quote or proof to back this up.

  18. 2 questions only in your + page
    questions 1
why magazine only go years 2010 to 2015 but jump got 1999 to 2016 why is that. And don't know my computer is broken or not but i don' see Sunday in + any more like it been cut off.

    question 2
Can you add more years on your + page in jump like 1998. when i saw 1999 it don't got issue 1 to 25 why is that?

    1. Sorry for the late reply.
So regarding your first question. I could only find sources or data about magazine and sunday from 2010+. However, this was not the case for Jump. This must be because of its popularity as I was able to find a Japanese source that covered Jump since 1999.
Also, Sunday rankings are working on + with the exception of 2012. I will try and sort that out.

As to your second question. Like I mentioned I was able to get the early Jump rankings from a Japanese source, however it too was not complete so I only posted the data I had.

  19. yo matey, really appreciate what you are doing. as a fan of yuragi-sou i thought i'd ask what you think the chances are of it being cancelled? because following your rankings it dropped two times out of the top ten (placing 11th) and one time 10th place. and how many ranks are there in total? many thanks in advance!

    1. Hey. So the number of ranks in Jump really depends on the number of series running and which have colour pages etc. This means it can vary.
In regards to Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san. It has been low in the rankings. If it persists then it is very likely to be cancelled. Personally I do feel it will be cancelled despite hearing nothing but good things about this ecchi/supernatural theme series.

    2. Another thing I noticed is the series has published many colour pages in Jump. This may be an attempt by the editors to promote the series.

  22. I've been following alot of the new series shounen jump got out this year like Hungry Marie, Dr Stone, U19, We never learn etc. Whats your opinion on which of these are likely to get axed?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. See this series U19 might go first .Dr stone is safe .We never learn is in the middle

      Delete
    2. Dr. Stone is going to be safe for a while. For the author who also created Beelzebub, Hungry Marie flopped, it's flirting with bottom 3 every week, though it's only be in the bottom 3 once. We Never Learn stays in the mid-table, though the quality of the story seems to be dropping. U19 is likey be the first one to get axed.

    3. I personally think all of the series will be cancelled with the exceptions of Dr Stone and We never learn. I do believe We never learn will be axed at some point in the near future but it will probably remain in the magazine for now as it is the only rom-com in Jump.

    4. What about that new romantic comedy manga coming out .It feels like this new series may get cancelled if people aren't interested in it

    5. Cross account ,this series is gonna compete with it

    6. Hey Rao I don't think that the promised neverland would get cancelled seeing by the ratings it may be dr. stone which might get cancelled

  23. It seems to me that most series may be in luck .Heard himoru zumou might end and Gintama's ending soon .Soon one piece and Hunter x Hunter are the only old manga here .So the haikuyu is the third oldest manga at this point
